FISCAL NOTE

Senate Bill 356 as passed the Senate (1) codifies existing practice of setting the current salaries for district attorneys (DAs), serving as of October 1, 2021, to $1,000 less than the highest paid circuit judge of the state; and (2) establishes a new compensation plan for DAs newly elected or appointed after October 1, 2021, which provides for an initial salary of $140,000 with a 7.5% pay raise after completion of each term of office, up to three terms. This bill also provides for a 7.5% increase to the base DA salary for each six full years of service as a full-time assistant attorney general or full-time assistant DA.

The new compensation plan could increase or decrease the obligations of the State General Fund beginning in fiscal year 2023 by an undetermined amount dependent upon (1) the number of newly appointed or elected DAs and (2) the difference in the compensation of the newly elected DA and the compensation otherwise received under current law. The current salary for DAs is $156,522.
