FISCAL NOTE

House Bill 280 as passed the House of Representatives expands the requirement for reduced speed school zones for all public and private schools and requires county commissions, municipalities, or the State Department of Transportation, respectively, to place and monitor the school zone signs according to which entity is responsible for the maintenance of the road.

This will increase the obligations of the counties, municipalities, and State Department of Transportation by an estimated $2,000 for each new school zone sign, if the signs are purchased and installed by the State Department of Transportation. This amount could be higher or lower if the county or municipality uses a different source to purchase and install the signs. The increased obligations of the counties or municipalities could be offset by fines collected pursuant to school zone speed violations occurring within the respective school zone.
