FISCAL NOTE

House Bill 486 as amended and reported by the Committee on Education Policy allows K-12 students to complete extended learning opportunities, approved by the State Board of Education (SBE), a local board of education, or a public charter school, that, if approved, count as an elective credit toward graduation, and provide: (1) enrichment; (2) career readiness or employability skills; or (3) any other approved educational opportunity. Commencing with the 2021-2022 school year, requires the SBE, local board, or public charter school to routinely inform students and their parents of extended learning opportunities.

This bill could increase the administrative obligations of the SBE and local boards of education to adopt and implement extended learning opportunities policies, including (1) an application process to approve outside entities offering extended learning opportunities for credit and (2) a credit approval process for students.
